LEAP’s impact in Zimbabwe
LEAP traveled to Zimbabwe in September of 2010 to complete our 2nd surgical mission. LEAP surgeons operated on over 40 children, mostly infants with cleft deformities, some as young as 2 month old and weighing 6 lbs. LEAP is very specific in selecting the best possible medical personnel, and the world-class pediatric anesthesiologists that accompanied LEAP made it possible for us to perform these complex surgeries on these young infants safely and effectively. In Zimbabwe, LEAP has formed a strong relationship with Celebration Health (a Christian Mission organization associated with the largest church in Zimbabwe), the Zimbabwean branch government that controls health care, and the university that trains medical students and young doctors. LEAP focuses as much as possible on training the local doctors and nurses in Zimbabwe. Our ultimate goal is to relegate ourselves to an ancillary role (we anticipate 7 to 10 years) and help stabilize the country and promote economic development.
