LEAP’s impact in India
LEAP returned to Damoh, India in February of 2011 to continue its yearly reconstructive program there. Damoh is in a remote and impoverished part of India untouched by the development and modernization going on in some parts of India. LEAP doctors and nurses were met by 300 overjoyed patients with unrepaired cleft lips and palates on its first trip to Damoh in the early 2000’s. The patients ranged in age from infancy to 70 year old adults. A parade was given for LEAp celebrating the first team that had ever come to this part of India to provide these life-changing services. LEAP has formed a strong partnership with Central India Christian Mission and will continue to return to Damoh on a yearly basis. Last February, while 15 LEAP doctors and nurses were in Haiti saving life and limb, a 27-person LEAP team of doctors went to India to carry out our regularly scheduled mission. This was the first time simultaneous LEAP surgical teams were working in different parts of the world.
