Among the shattered lives of our patients, the story of one patient, Mariline, touched our hearts in a special way. Mariline was only three months away from an accounting degree when she was crushed in the rubble of the collapsed university. Trapped for days, she lost her left arm and when LEAP doctors saw her, infection threatened her left leg and her life. The team made the decision to have her transported to Dallas for treatment.
After eight surgeries, months of rehabilitation therapy, and multiple fittings for a prosthetic arm and leg, Mariline is once again planning for her future. Mariline is but one of a thousand patients treated by LEAP doctors since the earthquake. As much as the disaster changed Haiti, we believe it has also changed our mission, and our work in this beautiful country has only just begun.
