Listen to audio from Dr. Hobar on Anna Marie with the link below:
Anna Marie was the first patient LEAP brought back through the Landmark Fund, which is our special fund to bring these complicated cases [back to the United Staes]. We did a 17 hour operation on her, and had seven different surgeons involved. She spent two night in the the ICU, she had multiple blood transfusions…[this surgery] completely changed her life. She went back to the Dominican Republic after staying with my family (Dr. Hobar’s family) for several months, and she graduated from high school. [She] is the oldest child in a family of seven. [This surgery] really made a remarkable difference in this young ladies life. [Anna Marie] still calls my wife. My wife was her primary caretaker. When she was here, [Anna Marie] lived in our home. Anna Maria scrapes together enough to get a phone card, and for the past 12 or 13 years, whatever it’s been, once a month she’ll call my wife and just visit with her. It’s a pretty remarkable things.
